SecondLife as Video Development Tool
by Liz Bittar
In November the DevLearn 2008 Conference & Expo was held in CA. The event discusses best ideas and technologies for E-Learning.
One of the presenters, David Anderson, demonstrated how SecondLife can be explored as a creative corporate learning environment. In the workshop, participants had the opportunity to create their own personalized environments, and received tutorial CDs.
But for us, who did not have the chance to attend the event, Dave posted a note in his blog, with some useful tips.
The great thing about it is the use of Second Life as a “virtual fim studio” - it is possible to develop content and turn it into video, as shown in the example below, so that you don’t have to actually enter SecondLife in order to use it as a training tool.
Although this may be rather new to some of us, SecondLife is being used as a training and professional development resource, among other applications, as described by Sheila Webber, in a very insightful article “Second Life for Business: “Ten Techniques”.
The video below was extracted from another blog I recommend, Corporate Learning Strategies and Develpment.

What else can be done?

If you followed the link I suggested (above), you will see that creating your own avatar is an alternative for pricy 3D softwares.
But there are some “home made” solutions, through free programs like Gizmoz, for example. Using Gizmoz, my friend Mario Persona created different characters to interact with, in his Twine TV videos. One example is Asdrubal Wants a Job, in which he advises the poor guy on how to build a network, work on his personal marketing, and gave him some useful and badly needed tips on appearance and language. Can you think of a better idea for a Presentation Skills workshop?

He also wrote a soap opera on Customer Service, telling the story of a lousy receptionist who took so many advices from a client, that ended up falling in love with him. Cute story in several chapters, in which Mario fully explores the do’s and don’ts of customer service.
Internet offers a variety of resources for creative minds. And now that you’ve found the characters, here’s another cool tip for the voices: TTS Voice, a free and easy to use engine that converts text into lifelike spoken audio, in a variety of languages.
These are all resources to make our training sessions more fun. And it is easier to make comments on an avatar’s dressing style, than a real person’s sitting right in front of you, in a training session… We can always use humour and a bit of exaggeration, to stress out behavior, what not to wear, inappropriate language and so forth. Can come in handy in workshops on Facilitation, Communication and Presentation Skills, Meeting Management, Job Interviews, Team Work and even Ledership. Why not give it a shot?
